Our Founder
John Greco founded Christopher John Gallery five years after opening Josephine Press, creating a place to exhibit the work of innovative artists and printmakers.
We have never tried to define one aesthetic or establish a house style. The gallery is held together by something less visible: curiosity, rigor and a belief in work that opens rather than closes a question. More than anything, it reflects back the full sense of wonder artists give us to grapple with: the light, the shadow and all the complicated spaces in between.
Christopher John Gallery now invites collectors to discover and acquire from a collection built not through the market, but through making, collaboration and a lifetime of relationships with artists.
We have a selection available for showing online and even more in-person. E-mail us to book a visit: josephinepress@gmail.com
Who We Are
Christopher John Gallery grew from Josephine Press, the Santa Monica printmaking studio founded by master printer and artist John Greco in 1984.
For more than four decades, the press has brought artists together to experiment, collaborate and explore what is possible through ink and paper. The gallery carries that spirit forward—presenting works published at Josephine Press alongside rare proofs and artist prints collected through John’s lifelong relationships within the printmaking community.
Together, the press and gallery form a living archive of artists, ideas and discoveries shaped at the press.
Our Artists
Many are based in Los Angeles and throughout California. Others have lived, worked and exhibited across the country and around the world. Some arrived as established artists interested in extending their practice. Others developed alongside the studio over many years.
Our Collection
Our collection spans abstraction and figuration, observation and imagination, intimate studies and ambitious portfolios.
Across those differences is a shared willingness to experiment and to leave a lasting body of work in ink and paper.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
The collection includes signed and numbered editions, artist’s proofs, printer’s proofs and bon à tirer prints, each created through the original printmaking process.
Once an edition is complete, the plate is cancelled by scratching through its surface, ensuring that no additional impressions from that edition can be produced. This protects the integrity and rarity of each print.
-
AP, or Artist’s Proof, is an impression reserved for the artist outside the numbered edition. Artist’s proofs are usually identical to the editioned prints, but are marked “AP” to distinguish them.
PP, or Printer’s Proof, is an impression reserved for the printer who collaborated with the artist to produce the edition. These works are typically marked “PP” and often hold special significance because of their connection to the printmaking process.
BAT, or bon à tirer, means “good to pull” in French. It is the final proof approved by the artist and used by the printer as the standard for every impression in the edition. Because there is generally only one BAT, it is a particularly rare record of the collaboration between artist and printer.
Together, these proofs exist outside the numbered edition and offer collectors a more intimate connection to the artist, printer and making of the work.

Works available online can be purchased directly through the Add to Cart button. Each print will be carefully packaged for shipping and accompanied by documentation confirming its authenticity and edition details.
To experience the collection in person, you can also book a private viewing appointment. We’ll guide you through the available works and help you explore the full collection.
-
Not yet. The website currently features only a small selection of the full collection. Some works are too large or delicate to scan, while others are part of John Greco’s private, previously not-for-sale collection and are being made available for the first time.
We are documenting and releasing new works gradually, so the online collection will continue to grow. To view a broader selection—including pieces not yet listed online—you can book a private appointment.
-
Each work is priced individually based on the artist’s market, the size and condition of the print, the edition, and whether it is a numbered print, artist’s proof, printer’s proof or bon à tirer.
Because many works come directly from John Greco’s private collection and have rarely—or never—been offered publicly, pricing also reflects their provenance, rarity and relationship to Josephine Press.
Available prices are listed online, and we are happy to provide additional details about any work upon request.

Josephine Press is the working print studio where John Greco collaborates with artists to develop and produce original fine art prints. Christopher John Gallery was founded five years later as a place to exhibit those works, share them with the community and connect them with collectors.
The two have always been closely intertwined: Josephine Press is where much of the work is made, while Christopher John Gallery preserves, presents and places it. The gallery’s collection also includes artist’s proofs, printer’s proofs, bon à tirer prints and works acquired through decades of exchange with the artists who have passed through the studio.
